I don’t think we’re meant to have favourites in the auction but I always do. This year this item is very much my favourite, as it really is a one-off!
It’s a collection box from St Peter’s Church in Woolton. This is the church that was attended by John Lennon and his Aunt Mimi. John’s Uncle George is buried in the church graveyard, and, of course, the Church Hall is where Paul auditioned to joined John’s band in July 1957.
It has stood near the door to the Church since it was hand-made by a member of the Congregation in 1929. The maker's initials are in the base along with the date. This means it would have been there in the 1950s and while it’s not likely that John put any money in there, it is very possible that Mimi would have done.
There is some damage to the box, and the post is a little loose where it fits in the base.
Total height is 93cm. The base is 35cm x 28cm. The dimensions of the box are 21cm wide x 13 cm deep x 14 cm high.
Proceeds from the sale of this lot will go into the Church fund which includes the upkeep and maintenance of the Church and Church Hall.
The estimate for this unique lot is £120-£150
