Record Store Day Beatles Single.

April 17th 2010 was Record Store Day in the UK and a series of vinyl singles were issued to celebrate this. One of these was a reissue of the Beatles Paperback Writer/Rain single. It was limited to only 1000 copies, making it the most limited release of a Beatles single ever.

On the day these singles cost £4.99 each, however they were very quickly changing hands for larger sums on places like eBay. It's likely to become harder to get hold of the single as time goes on and they are currently costing between £80-£100 (which is the estimate this lot carries in the auction.)

Wings Japan Concert Programme from cancelled tour.

In January 1980 Paul McCartney was arrested in Japan for possession of marijuana. His nine day jail stint led to the cancellation of the planned tour of the country.

As this was at short notice programmes for the tour had already been printed and subsequently sold off to fans via the Wings Fun Club.

This copy is going into the auction in August and carries an estimate of £60 - £70

The lights go down - they're back in town O.K.

The Wings Over America tour was the biggest tour undertaken by any artist at that time. It produced the brilliant Wing Over America live album and the concert film Rockshow, (sadly unavailable on DVD)

This unused ticket is for the show at Fort Worth, Texas on April 9th 1976.

Estimate: £30-£40

Heswall Jazz Club Handbill.

Handbills were things that were often thrown away. They were produced to promote and event and after that served no purpose so most people would simply dump them in a bin. This makes handbills rather collectible.

This handbill for the The Heswall Jazz Club at Barnston Women's Institute is for a concert on March 24th 1962.

As you can see it's prior to the band signing with EMI, referring to the fact that they had had a record released on the Polydor label.

This handbill was kept by one of the promoters of the gig, and is probably as close to mint condition as you are likely to find such an item.

Estimate - £900-£1200

lower case harrison

Do you remember this early promotional card that I wrote about in January, where George had signed for the rest of the band?

Here is another one of those cards, but this time it is fully signed by all the Beatles and dedicated To Jackie love from The Beatles

George has signed his surname with a lower case H, this is common with early sets of signatures.

This set of autographs carries an estimate of £2500-£3000 so you can see when compared to a partial set like the one in the last post, that missing just one Beatle can make a lot of difference.

Lucky fan!

This 1962 Beatles Parlophone promotional card was signed on the reverse by Paul, John and George when the seller went round to Paul's house to get his signature and by chance the other two were there as well.

He later went round to Ringo's house to try to complete the set and was given a printed set  of autographs on a photo card. They are also offered in with this lot, although not worth very much at all.

Estimate £1200-£1500

Beatles Monthlies

The Beatles Shop sells a selected amount of original memorabilia as well as organising the annual Beatles Auction. Perhaps the most popular items of original merchandising are issues of the original Beatles Monthly magazine.

The publication ran from 1963 to 1969, a total of 77 issues. There was also three special Christmas Extras and special repeat issue that featured the best photographs from early issues.

The magazine’s photographer, Leslie Bryce had unrivalled access to the group throughout the 1960s, travelling the world and taking thousands of photographs. In addition, Beatles roadies Neil Aspinall and the late Mal Evans wrote many of the articles, and artist Bob Gibson created numerous cartoons and caricatures of the fab four on a regular basis.
- From Wikipedia.

The hardest issues to find are number 1 and the later issues from around 70 onwards, particularly the finally issue number 77.

A full set of 77 issues are for sale in the auction in August and carry an estimate of £400-£500

There is also a 1966 Christmas Extra in the auction. This is estimated at £30-£35.

Toppermost of the class?

Quarry Bank School plays an important role in the history of the Beatles. Not only did John Lennon attend the school from 1952 to 1957 but he also used a line from the school song to name his first band - The Quarrymen, and from the Quarrymen the Beatles were born.

In the fifties caps were very much a part of school uniforms and this cap is part of the uniform for Quarry Bank School at that time.

Items that revolve around the childhood of group members are often fascinating for fans and collectors alike. Last year we had a number of school photos and there is already an Liverpool Institute Book in the auction this year which features listings for George and Paul, and now we have cap from John's old school. I wonder what will turn up next!

The cap is estimated at £50-60
