Not everyone could afford to pay for large pieces of furniture so they often bought them on the "never-never" or Hire Purchase.
In the auction this year we have a payment book from Epstein's for 1958. The agent would go round to the customer's house each week and collect payments and mark in the book that the payment had been made. (According to the book the item was paid off in full.)
