It took me years to write….

There have been so many books written about the Beatles. Sadly very few have any monetary value.

Books from the time are popular with fans, but condition is everything with these items. Loose, damaged or missing pages, tears and creases and damaged spines all have a very big effect on the value of a book.

The edition of the book is also relevant. Many of the books have gone through numerous reprints over the years. Mind you some books had numerous reprints in the same year that they were first issued. For example – John’s two books from the sixties In His Own Write and A Spaniard In The Works were reprinted several times due to high demand in the months after release.

Here’s a lot for our auction which consists of both of his sixties books. The In His Own Write dates from the year of release but is a second edition. The copy of A Spaniard In The Works is a first edition.

Together they have an estimate of £60-£70.

Before the release of the Beatles Anthology Book, the only fully authorised biography of the Beatles was the 1968 book The Beatles by Hunter Davies. The book as been revised and reprinted constantly since then.

This first edition hardcover with dust jacket is going up for sale in our auction for an estimated £25-£35.

Beatles Crockery

The blue transfer plates and cups crop up often in our auctions and 2012 is no different.

So far we a nice selection of these items. They are a nice affordable way to have an original item that looks great on display.

Two biscuit plates.

These are for sale in a lot together, they carry an estimate of £ 80-£90

A plate with a Washington Pottery stamp on the reverse. Not all the Washington Pottery plates have the stamp, but they still date from the same time. However anything with this blue Beatles pattern and a gold rim is a reproduction from a later era.

The plate is estimated at £30- £40

Beatles mugs or cups came with different stamps or imprint on the base. This one is embossed with “Vogue Tams England 64” on the base.

It has an estimate of £40-£50.

A small piece of Mersey Beat history

We get some interesting little snapshots of history in the auction.

For example, here’s a receipt on Mersey Beat headed notepaper for copies of the magazine stocked by the Jacaranda Club (owned by The Beatles’ former manager Allan Williams). The document is dated 14th March 1962 and includes a mention of issue 13 which is the famous Poll Winners edition of Mersey Beat from January 1962 with the Beatles topping the poll.

While the item isn’t of a high monetary value, the estimate is £40-£50, it is a fascinating (and affordable) slice of history. It features a well known issue of a historic Merseyside music magazine and a club, and its owner, with strong links to the whole Beatles story.

Two more McCartney signatures

We have recently taken in two more Paul McCartney signatures for the auction in August.

As with the previous post the signatures come from two different eras of Paul’s career.

The autograph on this cigarette packet was obtained in Rhyl in 1963 when the Beatles played at Ritz Ballroom in July that year.

It has an estimate of £250-£300.

The second autograph has an interesting story attached to it. The vendor used to work for Hoover and a colleague had to go on a call to Jean Boht’s house. Jean Boht was the star of the popular sitcom Bread, playing the matriarchal Ma Boswell. The vendor was a fan of the series and asked if her colleague would get her an autograph. They did, and they also got an autograph from the other person visiting Jean Boht that day, who just happened to be Paul McCartney. The autograph also features a smiley face drawn by Paul which adds to the appeal of the signature. It carries an estimate of £400-£450.

McCartney Signatures

Autographs feature heavily in our auction each year. We’ve already taken some in for the 2012 event.

We have two Paul McCartney autographs from different eras of his career.

First of all here’s a signature from the 70s on the back of a Wings postcard. It was signed in Glasgow.

It has an estimate of £350-£450.

Next here’s one in a copy of Blackbird Singing, which was signed at WH Smiths in Liverpool. Fans waited out overnight in wintery conditions to meet Paul at this signing event.

It has an estimate of £450-£500

The value of autographs very much depends on what the signature is on. Books, records and on the front of photographs or postcards are the most desirable. With the exception of signatures in books, most of the time people are looking for something they can frame up with the minimum of fuss. The condition of the signed item also has an effect on the price.

We will never give a valuation on signed items without seeing them first.

A Christmas Gift from Them to You

The Beatles Fan Club Christmas Flexi discs regularly appear in our auctions.

The flexible plastic records were issued at Christmas time to all the members of the Beatles fan club and contained a special recorded message by the band to the fans.

In 1963 apparently 25,000 were made and sent out to fans, then a further 10,000 got sent out without sleeves due to demand. After that obviously the fan club numbers exploded and many more copies of subsequent discs were sent out.

The rarest of the Christmas records dates from 1970, when fan club numbers were falling. This was a proper vinyl album which compiled all the previous Christmas flexi discs together on one record.

So far we have flexi discs from 1963 to 1967 in the auction. The 1963 disc is estimated to sell for around £80-£100 and the rest for around £50-£60 each.

The auction is held the Saturday before the August Bank Holiday every year, but lots are taken in well in advance. Space in the auction is limited so we encourage people to contact us about potential lots as soon as possible. Most years the sale is full by the start of June.

How Absentee Bidding Works

We've had a few questions about how the absentee bidding works.

All you need to do is to tell us the amount you would bid up to if you were in the room. Once we have a note of this limit we will bid on your behalf up to that amount. We are required to obtain the item for the best price within your limit depending on reserves and bids in the room.

So, for example - you choose a top bid of £100
In the auction room the bidding begins at £50, a bidder in the room bids £55, the reserve is £60 so the auctioneer will bid that amount on your behalf, the bidder increases their bid to £65, the auctioneer will bid £70. The other bidder drops out. The item is yours for £70 (plus buyers premium and postage of course)

Please note - Bids in the room take precedence over absentee bids so in the above example, if the bidder in the room took the bid up to £100 they would win the item not you.

Not all items have reserves on them, but we are not allowed to give details of any reserve prices on items.
We also cannot tell you what other absentee bidders have bid on items, however we can advise you whether your bid has a good chance of success. (But please do note that this is in no way a guarantee that you will be successful, we don't know how things will go in the room on the day.)

Absentee bids need to be placed with us at least 24 hours in advance as we need to make sure all the information is with the auctioneer on the day. Placing an absentee bid is a clear intention to buy. Bids may be withdrawn at any time up to 24 hours before the auction.

This means all absentee bids need to be with us by the morning of Friday 26th August. This is also the last opportunity to increase, change or withdraw your bid.

If you are attending the auction with the intention to bid on an item you need to register for a bidding paddle first. You can register on the viewing day as well as the morning of the auction. We will need contact details including your home address, where you are staying in Liverpool if applicable, a phone number where possible, and email address. This information is not passed on to other parties. Your email address will be used next year to send you notification about to download future auction catalogues.
The bidding paddle is numbered, if you are the winning bidder you need to make sure the auctioneer has noted this number.

Covering the Cavern Club from beginning to end!

The 2011 Liverpool Beatles Auction boasts lots that cover the entire history of the original Cavern Club from its roots as a Jazz club through to its final demise.

The Hessys publication Frank Comments (Lot 92 – three issues) and Merseyside Jazz Magazine (lot 91) carried adverts for the Cavern Club and it organised it's own Jazz Festival in 1960 with a programme of events (lot 95) that included Rory Storm and The Hurricanes, featuring Ringo Starr on drums.

When the Beatles were playing in the Cavern one fan took her records Love Me Do (lot 206) and Please Please Me (lot 205) down to the club in her handbag (lot 200) to get signed.

When the Cavern stage was replaced in the 1960s it was cut into pieces and sold off to Beatles fans (lot 259). The Cavern closed in the mid sixties, but it did not go quietly, there were protests and eventually the club reopened in July 1966. The Prime Minister came along to the reopening. There was a programme for the event (lot 214) and Rufus Thomas and Solomon Burke were contracted to play during the day (lots 273 & 274)

After the reopening the club started to sell branded merchandising. There are quite a few examples in the auction including a very rare Cavern Tshirt (lot 264) and a full price list for merchandise available to fans. (lot 287)

The club was finally subjected to a Compulsory purchase order from the Railways (lot 253) and set for demolition. But not before the gas meters were all read. The club contacted the Gas Board by letter (lot 216) informing them that demolition was imminent and they weren't responsible for damage to Gas Board equipment that wasn't removed.

And just when you think the story of the original Cavern is over, building work on the site a decade after the club was demolished yields a number of original bricks from the original club that are sold off by the new site owners for a local charity. (lot 215.)

And this is only skimming the surface of Cavern items in this year's auction!

The Beatles graced the stage at the Cavern Club a little shy of 300 times. Sometime after they became world famous the original Cavern stage was taken up, divided into small sections and sold to fans.

New Beginnings At The Cavern Club

In February 1966 the Cavern Club was closed despite fan protests. However it changed hands and reopened in July 1966.

Harold Wilson officially reopened the club and the ceremony was attended by, among several others, Bessie Braddock MP, Ken Dodd, Billy J Kramer, The Fourmost, Georgie Fame, Dave Dee Dozy Beaky Mick and Tich, Jimmy Savile and Simon Dee.

As well as the previously mentioned programme for the event, we have a number of other lots from the grand re-opening.

Here is an invitation the reception attended by the Prime Minister Harold Wilson.

Several artists appeared at the re-opening. Here are two contracts for performers appearing during the afternoon. One is for Solomon Burke and the other is for Rufus Thomas.

These carry estimates of £80-£100 each.

To see the entertainment for the day you would have needed a ticket to get into the club. They looked like this.

The Press obviously covered the re-opening, and this pressbook was provided to give them information about the event.

Not everyone could attend the event so some sent telegrams wishing the club well. Two of these (from Noel Gay Artists and Peter & Gordon) are up for sale in the auction.

The Beatles at your feet!

As They Write This Letter

Here are a couple of nice lots of correspondence from family members.

This letter is from George’s mum Louise Harrison to a fan, on behalf of George. She would often write to fans who wrote to George in the 60s.

This item carries an estimate of £100-£130.

Next is a short typed note from Maureen Starkey (Mrs Ringo Starr at the time) thanking a fan for a gift sent to their second child, Jason.

The shirt off Paul’s back!

…well a piece of it anyway!

This small piece of material is from a shirt that belonged to Paul McCartney. It was given to an assistant who helped out at the fan club in the 60s, and comes with a note from fan club secretary, Freda Kelly.

This unusual and rather interesting item has an estimate of £250-£300. Surely a must for any Paul fan.

Sending Postcards to the Boys.

Like everyone else, when on holiday Ringo would send out postcards to his friends. (And as his book Postcards from the Boys testifies, he’d get lots back too.)

This autograph book comes from someone who was an assistant at the Beatles Fan Club.

It contains, amongst others, signatures from Louise and Harold Harrison, Maureen Starkey and Freda Kelly. There’s also a full of Beatles Autographs written by Neil Aspinall – not the Beatles.

Cavern Programme 1966

On 27th February 1966 the Cavern Club closed. Bailiffs went it with the help of a police presence and the 100 or so teenagers who had built impromptu barricades left peacefully. Despite a public campaign to raise money to reopen the club it was sold on 18th April by the court receiver as part of Ray McFall's bankruptcy proceedings. It was bought by a gentleman named Joe Davy who revamped and reopened the famous club.

The club reopened officially on 23rd July 1966. The opening ceremony took place at noon and there was a power failure during it! Harold Wilson officially reopened the club and the ceremony was attended by, among several others, Bessie Braddock MP, Ken Dodd, Billy J Kramer, The Fourmost, Georgie Fame, Dave Dee Dozy Beaky Mick and Tich, Jimmy Savile and Simon Dee.

This is a programme for the reopening event.

Another Brick from the Wall…

In the early 1980s the site of the original Cavern Club in Mathew Street was excavated ready for a new building to be erected on the site. Several bricks from the original club were saved and sold to raise money for a local charity. This is one of those bricks complete with its plaque explaining it's history.

We are very pleased to say that we have reached our quota of items for the 2011 auction.
The number of lots we are able to take is limited due to the time available to us that day.

Please DO NOT attempt to turn up with items on the day of the auction, ALL auction items are taken in advance of the sale. No exceptions.

However we are still able to offer valuations on any items you may have. The service is free and we will also be able to advise you if your item would be considered for the 2012 Beatles Auction when we start taking lots in again around November.

There are various ways we can assess your items.

You can bring them into the shop for us to look at. It is best to call in advance to be certain someone will be available to look at your items. If you just call in on the off the chance then please try not to make it a Friday as the person you will need to see isn't usually available that day. The shop is open every day of the week however so there's plenty of other opportunities.
You can also email the shop sending as much detail about your items as possible, preferably with photographs. The same applies if you contact us via the post. Scans or good quality photocopies of the items are useful.

IMPORTANT -We will not assess any autographed items without seeing them, whether in person or via a good, clear photograph, scan or laser photocopy.

If contacting us via post please enclose a stamped addressed envelope for a reply.

Extremely Rare Tony Sheridan and Beatles Single

Up for auction in August is this copy of My Bonnie by Tony Sheridan and The Beatles

It is an original German Polydor issue, with picture sleeve. As the vendor worked nearby she purchased the single from NEMS making it one of a limited numbered of copies imported to the shop especially by Brian Epstein after being asked by several fans about it.

Two Signed Singles.

There are two very special signed items going into the auction this year. Both are from the same vendor who was a fan from the early days and both are singles.

First is the debut single for the Beatles on the Parlophone label, Love Me Do. It is a red label version, purchased on the day of release from NEMS. A few days later it was taken down into The Cavern Club where it was fully signed on the B-Side by all four Beatles. (The vendor had participated in a vote to decide what would be the single release and their vote was for PS I Love You.)

Similarly this red label Please Please Me single was purchased from NEMS as soon as it was released and again a few days later was dutifully taken along to a Beatle Cavern gig and fully signed by the whole band.

This telegram dated 21st August 1968 was sent to Ringo and Maureen from Peter Sellers.

It is addressed to Mr G Starkex and is to let them know that the weather is holding up his visit to them.
The Starkeys and Sellers were friends, later that year Ringo and Maureen bought Sellers' house and in 1969 Ringo would make the Magic Christian with the comedy star.

This cup and saucer set is unusual as it is with the original plain black cup from the set. We rarely see the original cup as people think the saucer should be matched with a decorated cup.

All I Want For Christmas is....

Every year members of the Beatles Fan Club received a Christmas message on a flexi disc, however as the band tumbled towards the inevitable end it became more difficult to get them all together. The last couple of flexis saw them recording their messages separately and them being edited together. The last Christmas record sent out was a 12" vinyl disc collecting together all the previous messages.

The deadline for taking items into the auction is fast approaching. Space is limited and once we reach the allocated number of lots we can't take anything else into the sale.

If you have anything you would like to place the auction it's important that you contact Stephen at The Beatles Shop sooner rather than later. We don't take in multiples of items so records and some of the more popular items of original memorabilia are already covered, but it may be worth asking anyway, just in case.

Autographs need to be authenticated which means Stephen needs to see them either in person or via a clear photograph or scan.

You can contact Stephen via email on auction@thebeatleshop.co.uk or via telephone on 0151 236 8066 during normal shop opening hours (Mon-Sat 9.30am-5.30pm, Sundays 10.30am-4.30pm)

Please note - Stephen does not work on a Friday. Any callers who ring or come in on a Friday will be asked to call again on another day.

He is usually in during the rest of the week including Saturdays and Sundays. However he will also be unavailable on 16th, 29th and 30th June.

Brian Epstein's coat

This smart looking wool and cashmere coat made by Aquascutum of Regent Street in London was once the property of Brian Epstein, owner of NEMS and manager of the Beatles.

The vendor's sister was given the jacket by the father of Peter Brown. She would go for meals with Peter, his family and Queenie Epstein when he visited Liverpool. His father gave her the coat for her husband to wear, but it wasn't to his style but they kept hold of it.

Liverpool Institute Desk

This wooden school desk comes from the Liverpool Institute for Boys. It was rescued from a skip by the vendor when he found out the desks were being thrown out and burnt.

The vendor attended the Institute in the same years as Paul McCartney and was in a couple of classes with him.

It’s a sturdy desk with a hinged top and an ink well hole.

Famous Liverpool Institute alumni include Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Arthur Askey, Mike McCartney, Peter Sissons and Bill Kenwright.

Monthly Beatles Fix

The Beatles Book came out every month to give fans a regular fix of Beatles news and pictures.

It ran for 77 issues throughout the 1960s ended around the time the group split up. (The later issues are harder to find than those from when the group’s popularity was at its height.)

A Doorway to History!

38 Kensington, Liverpool is a significant address in Beatles History.

In 1955 Percy Phillips established his recording studio at that address, and in 1958 a band called The Quarrymen (then comprising John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, John "Duff" Lowe and Colin Hanton) recorded their version of That'll Be The Day there. That song and the b-side, In Spite of All The Danger - a Lennon/Harrison composition - appeared on the first Anthology CD.

This is the original front door that stood in the threshold that the embryonic Beatles, like many other Merseyside artists, would have crossed to make that very recording.

The studios closed in 1969, and recent refurbishments to the property, which bears a plaque proclaiming it's place in Beatles history, has included the original door being removed and replaced by the current owners.

This is fabulous opportunity to own a piece of Beatles/Merseyside history.

The door will be offered for sale in our annual Liverpool Beatles Auction in August along with around 300 other lots of interest to Beatle fans.

1959 - 1960 Casbah Club Membership Card

This 1959-1960 Casbah Club Card dates from the early days of the club.

The Casbah Coffee Clubm owned and operated by Mona Best (Pete's mum), opened in 1959. The Quarrymen played there during that year and in 1960 The Beatles made their Casbah Club debut.

Dating from 1967 the above handbill includes the poet Brian Patten, The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band (their hit single was produced by Paul McCartney) and The Scaffold who of course feature Mike McGear (McCartney) among their personnel. Quite a line up for an All Night Happening!

A Trio of Cavern Items

Here's a trio of Cavern items from 1963/64. They date from after the Beatles had last played there but their fame rubbed off on to the venue.

First of all there's a 1964 Cavern Club membership card. These are the ones we see most often due to more people going to the venue after the Beatles hit the big time.

The estimate on this item is £60-70

An image of the Beatles in the Cavern Club was used on this promotional card for the venue.

The card dates from around 1963/4 and carries an estimate of £40-£50 (note - picture show both sides of the card.)

Finally this large format handbill dates from early 1964 advertising concerts at the club for February. The artists listed include The Escorts, The Remo Four and Herman's Hermits.

This item has an estimate of £60-£70.

The Beatles Shop in Mathew Street is taking in the last few lots for the 2011 Liverpool Beatles Auction this August.

This is the 21st year that The Beatles Shop has organised the event and even after all this time there are still items that take them by surprise. Last year a toilet that was formerly in place in John Lennon's house at Tittenhurst Park sold for nearly £10,000.

This year may also yield a few unusual items with a place in Beatles History.

Held during the International Beatles Week celebrations in the city, the auction attracts bidders from all over the world.

Some of the highlights so far for this year are -

- A cap that was owned by John Lennon, which is expected to fetch anywhere between £3,000 to £5,000.

- Rare Cavern Club items dating back to its roots as a Jazz Club including references to Rory Storm and The Hurricanes who featured a certain drummer named Ringo Starr.

- A letter on a Cavern letterhead referring to the demolition of the club in 1973.

There are a couple of signed items that are to be sold to raise money for charity.

- A star shaped tambourine signed by Ringo Starr is expected to reach around £200 for The British Heart Foundation.

- A unique scrapbook from the Liverpool WHSmith signing session for Blackbird Singing featuring unpublished photographs, cuttings, customer correspondence and a page signed by Paul McCartney is expected to raise at least £500 for a Liverpool Charity to be decided by the staff that worked on the event.

Letter referring to demolition of The Cavern Club 1973

This letter on Cavern Club headed note paper is an interesting and unique slice of Cavern Club history.

Dated 9th June 1973, barely two weeks after the final concert at the original Club, it is to confirm to the North Western Gas Board that the building had been vacated and the keys passed on to the demolition company. It even reminds them that damage to their gas pipes may cause an explosion during the demolition! (Thankfully this wasn't the case.)

The letterhead displays the original Cavern Club address but under the signature it bears the new address for Cavern Enterprises, which was just across the road.

The estimate for this one off item is £100-£120.

We have a copy of the programme for this festival in our auction in August. On the bill was Rory Storm and The Hurricanes who featured Ringo Starr on the drums before he became a Beatle.

Various Programmes and Handbills

Concert programmes are facinating documents from the 1960s. There were often several bands on a bill and the programmes usually contained short biographies and photos of these groups that didn't always hit it big.

This collection of six assorted concert programmes includes Gerry & The Pacemakers, Billy J Kramer, The Searchers, The Merseys, Dionne Warwick, The Zombies,The Overlanders and more on various bills. The Overlanders/Merseys programme even includes a band named The Fruit Eating Bears that boasted future Badfinger member Joey Molland!

Handbills for concerts were largely disposed of by venues, promoter and even the general public after gigs had been and gone.

This collection of six handbills are all for shows at The Empire Theatre in Liverpool. These Cavern Handbills are very rare items. Most of the time handbills were simply discarded after the events listed on them had passed so examples are few and far between, particularly older ones.

Both of these handbills are from the end of 1959 and both feature The Swinging Blue Genes.

One includes details of an appearance in the Cavern by Rory Storm and The Hurricanes, which would have included Ringo Starr on the drums.

Frank Comments...

Frank Comments was a magazine published by Frank Hessys Ltd. Hessy's was one of the music shops close to Mathew Street where members of various local bands including The Beatles bought their equipment.

Three copies of this magazine are for sale in our auction in August. They feature covers illustrated by Bill Harry. He also wrote articles and poems for the magazine. This is before he went on to launch the famous Mersey Beat magazine which documented the local group scene in the 1960s.

Each magazine features adverts for The Cavern Club which was a Jazz club back then.

Ringo and Paul signed items for Charity.

We have two very lovely signed items going into this year's auction with their proceeds going to worthy causes.

First of all this cool, white, star-shaped tambourine was signed by Ringo Starr in 2002. He signed with his first name and a star motif along with the year "02".

The vendor is donating any proceeds from the sale of this tambourine to The British Heart Foundation.

It carries an estimate of £200-£250.

Also being sold for charity is a unique scrapbook documented Paul McCartney's appearance at WH Smiths in Liverpool to sign copies of his poetry book Blackbird Singing. The signing took place on March 21st 2001.

The scrapbook contains newspaper cuttings and photographs from the time as well as letters and faxes from customers before and after the event.

Paul has signed one of the pages saying "Thanks" and added a large smiling face cartoon.

The proceeds from the sale of this one off item will go to a local Liverpool charity (still to be decided upon) and it carries an estimate of £500-£600.

This "flasher" necklace is from the 1960s. The pendant features an image that alternates from John and Ringo to Paul and George.

Limited Edition Prints from Genesis Publications

To tie in with their Limited Edition book of The Songs of George Harrison, Genesis Publications issued limited prints of some of the illustrations.

The were limited to 850 of each one and are signed by both the artist Keith West and George Harrison.

Silver Beatles Coin

These coins were offered for sale via a flyer that was inserted into Beatles Monthly.

The coins contain over an ounce of .999 pure silver (the overall weight of the coin is approx 30grams) The reverse of the coin features the dates 1965-1966. (ones featuring the dates 1966-1967 exist but are rarer.)

The fifth Beatle

Stuart Sutcliffe was the bass player in the Beatles and best friends with John Lennon. This large limited edition portfolio features several reproductions of memorabilia such as letters and sketches, as well as several photographs from the Early Beatles/Hamburg era.

The portfolio is housed in a slip case and limited to 1,000 copies. Each copy contains a numbered certificate of authenticity.

If Drumming is your madness....

This toy New Beat drum dates from 1964 and features a replica Ringo signature on the drum skin, and a colour Beatles image on the drum body.

It's a striking piece that would look great displayed on a wall or in a cabinet. We have a Ringo drum (of a different design) on the wall in the shop and it gets lots of attention and comments from visitors.

We all live in an original box!

We already have some original Yellow Submarine Corgi toys in this year's auction, however this one is in lovely condition and, more importantly, is in its original box.

The box has some wear and tear, and the item carries an estimate of £250-£300.

Lennon on the radio

These Lennon radios were an early "cash-in" item on the death of the Beatle. Dating from early 1981 they feature a demin clad Lennon doll that stands on top of a radio emblazoned with his name and the years of his birth and death.

Bizarrely the body of the doll is actually that of an Elvis doll manufactured to go onto a radio that was issued to cash in on Presley's death three years earlier.

Plastic George
